During Shark Week 2013, Discovery Network aired a very misleading documentary in its “Shark after Dark” series called Megalodon: The Monster Shark LivesThe “documentary” led many panicked people around the globe to believe that the Megalodon is “huge and real,” prowling the planet’s waters ready to make you its next prey. Of course, the events portrayed in Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives are about as real as those shown in Sharknado, and outrage among scientists and public figures erupted. Because Shark Week did Megalodon a huge injustice, we at Rice Catalyst are here to give you the real facts about the fascinating Megalodon, the monster shark that once lived.

Every American is aware of the historic Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, and its divisive aftermath, but most do not know the history behind the controversy. When our country was founded, abortions before quickening, which is when the fetus begins to move, were commonplace and accepted as a normal part of life. Abortifacient drugs were sold in pharmacies, advertised in newspapers, and could even be bought through mail order. When these failed, procedures were also readily available. States did not even begin to pass laws banning abortion until the mid-1800s, and even the Catholic Church did not condemn these abortions until 1869.

The average reader’s reading speed is around 250 words per minute. With that speed, in 6 seconds you can only read 25 words in total!! Although you can complete speed-reading training  to make your reading speed faster, it is still impossible to read through an entire resume in that amount of time. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that we get a resume reader with a higher reading speed. But how do people become faster readers, and what affects people’s reading speed?
